County baseball tournament details still not set

The Chilton County Baseball Tournament will be played on Monday and Tuesday in Maplesville, though the event might be that in name only.

Coach Derrick Littleton of Maplesville, the tournament host, said four teams—Isabella, Jemison, Maplesville and Thorsby—would play in the tournament.

But Thorsby coach Ab Argent said Friday evening he had yet to make a decision about whether his team would play.

Chilton County was never scheduled to play in the tournament, and Verbena coach Tommy Headley said he decided Friday his team would not play.

“We’ve got some sick, some hurt,” Headley said. “I had to play two seventh graders [Friday against Maplesville]. I just don’t think we could really represent Verbena baseball.”

Littleton said Friday evening the pairings for the tournament have yet to be decided because of Headley’s decision.

Originally, the five teams drew for seeding, and Jemison and Thorsby would have met in what amounted to a play-in game.

Inclement weather caused the tournament to be postponed until the end of the regular season, so Littleton said he thought it would be fairer to reassign the seeds and base them on record. Under that scenario, Isabella and Jemison would have been the teams to possibly play a third game, an idea that was unfavorable to Isabella coach Clay Shearer because his Mustangs have playoff games scheduled for Friday.

With Verbena’s absence, though, no team should have to play three games. Because

Littleton said play would begin at 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
