City approves parking lot

The Jemison City Council at its Monday meeting approved a bid to pave the parking lot for the under-construction Jemison Municipal Complex.

With a unanimous vote, the contract was awarded to Chilton Contractors in the amount of just more than $127,000.

The matter was discussed, though, with Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed asking a company representative for a timeframe. The council explained it is hoping the parking lot will be completed by the end of the month.

The company representative said work would begin this week.

In other business, the council:

Agreed to allow the Chilton County Board of Education, at no cost, to place an antenna on top of the city’s water tower off County Road 42.

The antenna would allow for better reception on the county’s school bus radio frequency.

“All the buses are radio equipped, and the reception up here is poor,” Reed said. “God knows we want them to have good communication.”

Council members determined the new antenna would not interfere with two antennae already on the tower—one maintained by Alagasco and another used by the county E-911 service.

Announced April is the city’s clean-up month.

Items not normally taken by trash collectors can be placed near roads this month, and workers will pick them up the last week of the month.

Workers will not pick up paint, tires or vehicle batteries.
