A Chilton County soccer team suffering from several injuries fell to Calera, 6-0, on Tuesday, but things are not as bad as they might seem.

The Tigers (4-2, 1-1 area) should be healthy before their final three area matches—and still have a chance to make the playoffs.

“We’re just trying to hold on and do all we can right now,” coach Dan Velasquez said.

CCHS sits in third place in its area, behind Talladega and Sylacauga. The top two teams from each area participate in the playoffs.

Calera (7-5) led 1-0 at halftime on Tuesday at Tiger Stadium but blew the game open in the second half. Christian Alverenga, Daniel Cicio, Mike Lubala (twice) and Christian Schafer (twice) scored for the visitors.

On two of its most promising attacks, Chilton sailed the ball high on a penalty kick at point blank range and was stopped by a diving save by the Calera goalkeeper.

CCHS keeper Casey Brand made a diving, one-handed stop midway through the second half, but it wasn’t enough to keep his team in the match.
