A majority of Chilton County Commissioners voted Monday night to come up with $7,500 to pay the Chilton County Humane Society, based on a motion by Commissioner Red Turnipseed.

The motion came in light of concerns about the lack of rural animal control in the county. Also, not long ago the humane society had requested additional funding from the commission.

Commissioners Allen Caton and Joe Headley opposed the measure.

“They (the humane society) show they’re about $2,000 a month short,” Turnipseed said.

County Attorney John Hollis Jackson said the county budget would have to be amended to show the appropriation. Administrator Vanessa Hendrick said the money would have to come out of the general fund.

The commission had recently cut the humane society’s annual appropriation from $20,000 per year to $7,500 per year.

Shortly before, Headley had asked if the commission could come up with any extra money to patch damaged roads. He also said the county needed to focus more on roads in general.

County Engineer Tony Wearren said one or two crews patch potholes every day.

Some potholes are so severe, he added, that they must be patched even if the repair only lasts a couple of weeks.

“We’ve got to do something,” Headley said.

Earlier in the meeting, residents addressed the need to replace a washed out bridge on County Road 455. Residents also addressed road problems and concerns due to flooding in the area.

After a lengthy discussion, Headley made a motion to replace the bridge and pave the road as soon as funding became available.

The motion failed 3-4, with Tim Mims, Greg Moore and Headley voting in favor.

Caton originally said he would not vote for the project until he knew funding was available.

Later, however, following the vote pertaining to the humane society, Caton said he would change his vote.

Caton also asked Headley to make a new motion on the bridge, but Mims said the issue could be addressed at the next meeting.

In other business, Turnipseed asked that the commission discuss at its next work session how to spend a 1-cent sales tax .
