The Thorsby Town Council voted unanimously to adopt a new zoning ordinance Monday night.

The ordinance’s passage comes after several public hearings conducted jointly by the town and the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham.

“I appreciate our zoning board for their hard work,” Mayor Dearl Hilyer said after the meeting. “They really did listen to the input from the people to come up with a good zoning ordinance that fits our town.”

The only change made to the ordinance Monday night was to change the zoning of a property north of the corner of Third Street and Frank Street from residential to agricultural.

Several adjustments had been made prior to Monday night’s meeting.

For example, commercial property setbacks were adjusted to allow for parking space in front of buildings. Initially, the setbacks were stricter.

The new ordinance, which incorporates several new categories, is more specific in its definitions and is intended to provide better protection for both the town and its residents.

“It gives us structure as to where we want to be, and overall it gives us protection,” Hilyer said.

The ordinance may be viewed by the public at Thorsby City Hall.

In other business, the council:

Voted to place two stop signs at the corner of Summit Street and Illinois Avenue.

Voted to purchase new signs for the fields at Sam Bentley Park. Sponsorships will be $250 apiece, with $100 of each sponsorship going toward the signs.

Awarded a bid to Angie Jones for park and recreation janitorial services.
