A police chase on Monday began in Chilton County, ended in Elmore County and resulted in no serious injuries despite the suspect flipping his vehicle several times–then driving off again.

Erby Shane Adams, 41, of Anniston was arrested and is being held in the Chilton County Jail. Bail had not been set Monday evening because law enforcement officials are still determining the extent of Adams’ charges.

E-911 received a call Monday that someone had stolen several items from O’Reilly Auto Parts in Clanton.

Using the description given, an investigator with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department approached a man refueling at a gas station near Interstate 65 Exit 205.

Adams fled, heading north on the Interstate before turning around in the median, dodging spike strips, exiting at Verbena, and making his way to Highway 31 South.

The officers in pursuit probably thought the chase had ended when Adams’ vehicle flipped several times on Highway 143 in Elmore County.

But the car came to a rest upright, and Adams took off again.

“I don’t know the right word for it,” Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said. “It’s unreal. It’s a miracle that he didn’t die.”

Adams was finally stopped on Highway 14 near the Elmore County Airport. He sustained only minor scratches.

Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell said Adams allegedly stole about $500 worth of items, including a car jack, from O’Reilly. Davis said Adams is also a suspect in a theft Monday at Dollar General in Clanton.

In addition to the Chilton County’s Sheriff’s Department, Clanton Police Department, Alabama State Troopers, Elmore County Sheriff’s Department and Wetumpka Police Department were involved in the chase at one point.

“It was a great effort by all the agencies involved,” Davis said. “It was handled professionally and safely.”
