The Maplesville Town Council held a public hearing Tuesday in reference to closing Parnell Avenue from its condemned bridge to Alabama 22.

Town clerk Sheila Haigler said no one was present to contest the closing.

The council passed a resolution to vacate that property.

The bridge was condemned many years ago, Haigler said.

The town decided to allow the property footage to go back to the landowners that are adjacent to it, which are the Maplesville United Methodist Church and resident Wade Burt.

The church said it did not have any use for the land, so they gave their footage to Burt.

The council opened bids for the paving of the parking lot adjacent to the barber shop on Main Street.

Four bids were made, and it was ultimately awarded to Construction Services from Prattville in the amount of $11, 600.

The council passed a resolution to reappoint Jimmy Stewart and Bernard Laister to the utility board for a term of six years, which expires May 2016.

A resolution was passed to allow the fire department to purchase a float dock trainer for $425 from Tuscaloosa Fire.

The police department said, as of last night, there was nothing new to report regarding its investigation of the Friend’s Diner fire.

The council is currently working with Maplesville Peewee Athletics to purchase a lawnmower to cut the grass at Maplesville Community Park, though no purchase has been.

The town purchased a half-page advertisement for $175 from the Clanton Lion’s Club for its East-West Peach Festival Program.

Haigler said the town was denied an energy grant it applied for from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant due to limited funding.

Haigler said the town wanted to install insulation in the library and police department, which have high power bills.
