The first day of qualifying for Chilton County public office will be March 1 for both Republicans and Democrats.
Those who wish to qualify should contact their party’s chairman, pay the qualifying fee and complete appropriate paperwork in the Chilton County Probate Judge’s Office in the courthouse.
Probate Judge Bobby Martin, chairman of the Chilton County Democratic Club, said several new faces have shown interest this year on both sides of the ballot.
“I think it will be a good turnout for candidates. People seem to be interested in good government and better government,” Martin said.
One new name has been announced for the office of Chilton County Superintendent of Education. Jason Griffin has announced he will run on the Democratic ticket. Also running are Republicans Tommy Glasscock and Larry Raines.
Martin said others have made inquiries but have not made their announcements public.
Republican Party chairperson Ann Glasscock reported high attendance to party meetings this year.
“That leads me to believe we have a lot more interest this time. I’m excited about it,” she said.
Glasscock emphasized that candidates are not officially qualified until their fees are paid in full.
Local qualifying fees are as follows: $1,050 for sheriff, $1,910 for superintendent, and $186 for coroner. The fees represent 2 percent of each office’s current annual salary.
The deadline to qualify for both parties will be April 2 at 5 p.m. Packets are available from the party chairmen and must be turned in to the Chilton County Probate Office before the deadline.
