The Chilton County soccer team on Tuesday was helped to its first win of the season by sophomore Ian Velasquez’s first goal of his career.

The Tigers (1-2) defeated Shades Mountain Christian, 3-1, in the Eagles’ season opener.

Velasquez scored the first goal of the game, and it came off a corner kick by senior Noe Chavez. The visitors failed to clear the ball, and Velasquez kicked it home.

“It happened real fast,” said coach Dan Velasquez, Ian’s father. “He’s been waiting on it for a while, and it finally came true.”

But SMCS tied the score at 1 before halftime.

In the second half, Chavez assisted on a goal scored by fellow senior Anthony Johnson (“That’s the way you draw it up,” Dan Velasquez said about the pass and header into the net) and then scored a goal of his own to ice the win.

Dan Velasquez also pointed out the play of goalie Casey Brand, a senior who is playing for the first time.

Now, the Tigers will have three weeks off before their next match, a date with area foe Tallassee.

The match will be played in Montgomery because work is being done to Tallassee’s field.
