It’s easy for those of us who have never served in the military to take for granted what our veterans have sacrificed.

For those who didn’t pay the ultimate price in combat, our veterans gave up many conveniences and luxuries we enjoy every day just so we can continue to live in a free country. Many service men and women continue to risk life and limb for their country, and sacrifice comfort and time with their families for the rest of us.

This Friday, the Birmingham-based Mobile Vet Center is coming to Clanton and will be stationed in the Walmart parking lot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The goal of the Vet Center is to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach and referral services to eligible veterans in order to help them make a satisfying post-war readjustment to civilian life. Veterans assisted by the program include those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Grenada, Panama, Bosnia, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq. The center also counsels sexual trauma survivors of all eras.

Family members of the listed veterans are also eligible for Vet Center services.

We are glad to hear that these services are being offered. We believe most would agree that we don’t do near enough for our veterans. It’s good to know there are people specifically trained to counsel them.
