There’s nothing quite like seeing a sports program that isn’t used to enjoying success, well, enjoy some success.

One such program, the Chilton County wrestling team, is making strides as this is being written. And the spring will provide many more opportunities for local sports fans to witness up and coming teams around the county.

The CCHS wrestling team is in only its third year of existence, and already the Tigers seem poised to establish themselves as one of the state’s best programs. One wrestler qualified for the state meet two years ago, and last year that number doubled to two state qualifiers.

Coach Kess Cottingham was asked, half jokingly, if he expected to qualify four wrestlers this year. Turns out that was a realistic goal.

And keep in mind that there are no seniors on this year’s squad. CCHS wrestling could be headed toward some really amazing accomplishments in the near future.

Spring is the season when the local sports scene blooms with new athletes and teams. About 25 local teams in six sports (tennis, soccer, softball, baseball, golf and track and field) compete in the spring, so there is something for everyone.

With that many groups, there are bound to be some players that are seeing varsity action for the first time and some teams fighting for respectability. That’s what makes this time of the year so compelling.

Last year’s highlights included the CCHS tennis team reaching new heights and what turned out to be the first county golf tournament.

I’m anxious to see what 2010 has in store.
