IHS prevails in tight one

Allison Mims scored five of Isabella’s 10 fourth-quarter points to lead the Mustangs to a 32-29 win over Verbena in the first round of the county basketball tournament.

No. 3 seed Isabella (7-8) will play No. 2 seed Thorsby at 6 p.m. on Friday, with the winner advancing to the championship game.

Tuesday’s game was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points.

Isabella held a 13-12 edge after one period, but Verbena tied it at 31 going into halftime.

Isabella led by one going into the final period.

Mims pulled down a critical rebound with 35 seconds left and her team clinging to a 2-point lead.

Verbena still got the ball with 6 seconds left and a chance to tie the game, but the Red Devils turned the ball over before getting up a shot.

Mims led all scorers with 14 points, while Verbena’s Marqueska Deramus was close behind with 13 points, eight of which came in the first quarter.

Both Kimi Jones and Kimberly Littleton scored six points for Isabella.

Imma Sanders scored seven points for Verbena.

Only one field was scored in the third period by either team; it was a 2-pointer by Jones.
