Jemison residents should make sure their will is reflected by voting in Tuesday’s special election on the sale of alcoholic beverages in the city.

The poll at Jemison Fire Station on Main Street will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

One doesn’t have to be in favor of legalized alcohol sales to believe the referendum is a good thing for the city. It is democracy at work. Whether you want alcohol in Jemison or not, the election is your chance to let your voice be hear.

As Mayor Eddie Reed pointed out, the referendum does not mean city officials are trying to force alcohol sales on anyone.

“It’s a decision we want the people to decide,” Reed said. “It’s not something the council is trying to push.”

The election was made possible by a new state law allowing municipalities with a population of 1,000 or more to hold a wet/dry referendum. Recently, a petition was presented to the council with signatures from 230 registered voters from Jemison, slightly more than the required 30 percent of voters in the last municipal election.

“It’s a matter of economics,” Reed said. “That’s our major concern.”

It’s also a matter of the principles the United States was founded on, so we’re glad the people of Jemison are getting to decide this matter for themselves.
