Clanton’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade will march at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18.

Participants will line up at Jack Hayes Field in Clanton City Park from 10 a.m. until noon, and the parade will make its way across town to E.M. Henry Park.

A free lunch and program will follow in the E.M. Henry Skills Center with guest speaker James Davis Jr., the principal of Autaugaville High School and a graduate of Chilton County High School.

Parade coordinator Evangelist Robert Binion invites everyone to celebrate the dream of the late civil rights leader.

“He fought for the rights of all people, not just black people,” Binion said.

The Keith High School Marching Band from Selma will march in the parade, along with several local groups. A community choir made up of different church choirs will sing at the lunch gathering. Also speaking will be Benny Chaney of the NAACP and local ministers.

Lunch will be donated.

“We’re asking all churches in the county to bring hot chili and cups to put it in, napkins, crackers, water and drinks or juices,” Binion said.

A drawing for cash prizes is held each year to help fund the parade. A love offering will be taken for the family of a Lomax mother and daughter who were killed in a fire at their home Jan. 3.
