Relay for Life getting in gear

It’s time once again to kick off Chilton County’s Relay for Life, the annual fundraiser to find a cure for cancer.
This year’s kickoff will be Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. in the LeCroy Career/Tech Conference Center. There will be pizza, door prizes, information about Relay and a silent auction.
“Anyone’s invited—survivors, team members or anyone who wants to learn more about Relay,” said Morgan Choat, area director, American Cancer Society. “This will be Relay’s 26th year nationally.”
The Chilton County gross goal for 2010 is $172,831. The sponsorship goal is $20,000. The total amount raised last year was $167,863.
Organizers hope to form at least 55 teams to help with this year’s fundraising. They also hope to attract more cancer survivors to the Relay event, scheduled for April 30. Last year, 105 survivors were present for the first lap around the track.
“We’re very grateful for the community and how they continue to support Relay,” Choat said. “Every school is involved, and a lot of churches are involved. It’s just a great community event.”
Ann Glasscock has taken over as event chairperson. She encourages anyone interested in forming a team to attend the kickoff.
“This is a very special year for me to be chairman, since I just lost my mother to cancer. I’m going to continue fighting for her. My goal is to make this the biggest and best Relay ever,” Glasscock said.
