It might not be the one they wanted, but the Red Devils on Wednesday will still be playing for a trophy.

Verbena lost to boys basketball tournament host Oak Grove, 81-57, on Tuesday in a semifinal game.

The Red Devils (8-7) actually led, 15-14, after the first period but were outscored 25-7 in the second and could never recover.

“They went to a halfcourt, 1-3-1 trap, and we just didn’t handle it,” coach Jonathan Shedd said. “We freaked out.”

Verbena will play Northside at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the eight-team tournament’s third-place game.

Brandon White led the Devils on Tuesday with 20 points.

Teammate Brad Boswell scored 17 points, Christian Coston had nine points and Jaronskie Williams had eight points.

Verbena defeated Oakman, 52-48, in its first tournament game.

The biggest lead for the Red Devils was seven points.

White was Verbena’s leading scorer with 21 points.

Teammate Jason Ray posted 17 points and 19 rebounds.
