A deer that crashed through the window of the Chilton County Extension Office last week caused nearly $1,000 in damages.

County Extension Coordinator Gay West said the clean up from the deer is nearly complete.

“When we move the furniture back in place, we are good to go,” West said.

The deer burst through a side window Dec. 21, attempted to knock out the front glass door and ran through several offices.

After a brief standoff, Jemison Animal Control Officer Bobby Tucker shot the animal with a tranquilizer gun. Clanton Animal Control Officer Chris Whittle later released the deer back into the wild.

The total price tag for the damages will range between $800-$1,000, West said. The final number will depend some on how much it cost to replace the front door’s glass.

“It could have been much, much worse,” West said.

West said the deer had been in offices from one end of the building to the other.

The kitchen window and front door had to be replaced, while the carpet was professionally cleaned. Inmates from the Chilton County Jail also helped clean the offices.

Chilton County owns the building, which once housed the county’s health department. The local American Red Cross chapter is also located there.
