Following in what is becoming a long line of accomplished baseball men, Jacksonville State assistant coach Travis Janssen will be the guest instructor at Chilton County’s baseball camp in January 2010.
CCHS coach Josey Shannon the past two years has brought in Florida Marlins hitting instructor Jim Presley and Chicago Cubs scout Mike Valerazo.
“For them to meet someone in the baseball world outside their home is good,” Shannon said about the 9- to 12-year-olds that will participate in the camp. “[Janssen] is just a phenomenal coach. He’s a motivator; he’s got a lot of energy.”
Janssen said his goal for the camp is that the participants have fun.
“If they can learn one thing during that day, then it was a successful day,” he said.
Janssen is going into his fifth season at JSU and has helped with camps across the country, he said.
Shannon said he and Janssen met over the summer at JSU’s team camp, which CCHS attended.
More than 40 players participated in CCHS’s last camp, Shannon said.
“I hope to build on that,” he said. “I want the kids to be familiar with me, the teaching style. I want to teach them as much as I can at an early age.
The camp will also benefit current Tigers, who will help Janssen and Shannon.
“I believe you learn more when you have to teach the game,” Shannon said.
The camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 9 at Jack Hayes Field.
Those interested should register the morning of the camp, and the cost will be $40.
