Chilton County United Way is inching closer to reaching its goal of $200,000.

The organization has raised $188,762 and anticipates several more donations.

“We’re close, and we still haven’t heard from someone of the people,” said Curtis Smith, United Way board chairman. “Hopefully, after the first of the year, we’ll be able to announce our goal.”

The United Way’s annual campaign runs from August through Dec. 31.

“For several years, we’ve been able to meet our goal,” said Smith. “We’re thankful for our contributions. The board works hard and so do the staff.”

Money raised by the United Way goes to support 25 local charities, such as the Emergency Assistance Center, Boy and Girl Scouts, the Humane Society, Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity.

Other charities helped include the American Red Cross, 4-H/Alabama Cooperative Extension and Toys for Tots.

During Tuesday’s board meeting, campaign chairman Bobby Martin reminded everyone that the end of the year is a good time to donate because of the potential tax savings.
