Nativity, lighting planned for Thorsby

A Christmas tree lighting will follow a live nativity scene in Thorsby’s Richard Wood Park on Friday night.

The nativity scene is set for 7 p.m., weather permitting, and will feature at least 50 actors and singers from area churches.

“There will be some music and the reading of the Christmas story,” event coordinator Tracia Bussey said. “The live nativity scene will be in progress along with the program.”

In past years, a musical event followed the Thorsby Christmas Parade.

This year, the event is being held separately and with more activities.

“We wanted to try something different,” Bussey said. “We’re hoping this will be the beginning of a nice little tradition each year.”

Parking is available at Thorsby School or Richard Wood Park. Bleachers will be set up, but anyone is welcome to bring a lawn chair, Bussey said, advising people to dress warmly.

Mayor Dearl Hilyer and council members will light the Christmas tree in the park at 8 p.m. Prior to the lighting, families and individuals may help decorate the tree.

“Anybody that wants to come and place a Christmas ornament on the tree in memory or in honor of somebody is welcome to do it,” Hilyer said.

Hot chocolate and candy canes will be given out while supplies last.

Admission is free.
