Up to an inch of snow is possible overnight Friday in Chilton County, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Calera.

A strong upper level storm system will move across central Alabama late Friday into Saturday morning. It will bring with it just enough moisture to squeeze out some snow across a large portion of the state, according to forecasts.

The highest snowfall potential will be along a roughly 25- to 50-mile wide area from Clanton down to Demopolis, where around 1 inch of snow will be possible. Other areas are expected to receive one half of an inch of snow or less.

The snow chances will begin as early as 10 p.m. Friday across southwestern parts of the state and will spread east into central Alabama after midnight. Snow chances are expected to end by around 10 a.m. Saturday, earlier here in Chilton County.

Any snow that does fall won’t stick around for long. Soil temperatures will remain in the uppers 40s to around 50 degrees, and surface temperatures will mostly stay above freezing.

Some clearing is expected Saturday afternoon. Temperatures will warm into the 40s, melting away any snow that does collect on grassy and elevated surfaces.
