More than 360 students and parents attended Clanton Elementary School’s Math and Science Night on Tuesday night.

Following a snack meal and a question/answer session regarding the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI), parents followed their students to classrooms for a math activity and a science activity.

“It’s interesting. We learn what our children are doing in school,” said Rachel Wilson, mother of first-grader Caleb Wilson.

Each student in attendance guessed the number of items in a container, and a winner in each grade got to keep a container along with the goodies inside.

The prizes and goody bags were donated by local businesses.

The event, which was sponsored by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization, followed the AMSTI recommendations for instruction.

The question/answer session was hosted by a University of Montevallo representative.

“It’s all hands-on activities and inquiry-based activities,” Principal Rebecca Threlkeld said. “In other words, children have to think through the problem solving process to get the answer. It’s not just a memorization process.”
