University of Montevallo alumni from Chilton County met Wednesday at The Cake Factory in Clanton.

The Chilton County Alumni Club got together to discuss rejuvenating the county’s scholarship at UM. Undergraduate students also presented research projects they have been working on this past year. Student Erica Russell provided special music too.

Jeremy Ward is a 2000 graduate of Jemison. He then attended Montevallo. After graduating in 2005, he returned to his alma mater to serve as the university’s annual fund and special projects manager.

Ward said it’s always neat to come home and fellowship with other alumni.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Ward. “It’s cool growing up in the area and then to come home and help give back.”

Chilton County has one of Montevallo’s largest alumni bases, behind Jefferson and Shelby counties. Around 850 graduates reside in Chilton County.

The alumni club discussed the Chilton County Scholarship. The scholarship has been awarded for many years, but funding has recentlywaned, said Rachael Banks, director of development and alumni affairs.

“We’re trying to raise awareness and support,” said Banks. “It was something that was started years ago. It’s kind of being reinvigorated now.”
