Chilton County United Way has surpassed the halfway point in its 2009 fundraising campaign, board chairman Curtis Smith said Wednesday.

At last count, funds totaled more than $105,000. The organization’s goal for this year is $200,000.

“We’re about halfway,” Smith said. “We encourage folks to give, and we thank those who have given thus far. United Way means a lot to the people of Chilton County.”

Board members are awaiting the results of a September golf tournament sponsored by Williams. Representatives from the company’s Billingsley plant are expected to meet with board members soon.

The next fundraiser is Dollar Day for United Way, which is Thursday, Dec. 3. On this day, students and faculty members of local schools are asked to bring at least $1 to donate.

Smith pointed out that United Way supports local Christmas charities such as Operation: Santa Claus and Toys for Kids.

“We look to continue to help these agencies,” Smith said.

He thanked all businesses, industries, schools, churches, organizations and individuals for their continued support. The campaign lasts until Dec. 31.
