Veterans from several wars and conflicts, their families and community members gathered Wednesday to honor America’s military members, both past and present.

A Veterans Day program was held at American Legion Post 6 in Clanton. The patriotic tribute included prayers, songs and comments from past servicemen.

Retired Navy Commander Robert Threlkeld, a native of Verbena, delivered the keynote speech.

“Some people think Veterans Day is just another holiday, but it’s a special time for us,” said Threlkeld, who earlier in the week spoke to students at Clanton Elementary, Clanton Middle and Thorsby High schools. “It brings back some memories about what you did in the service. Some of it’s not so good, but most of it is.”

Threlkeld said he doesn’t know how his life would have turned out without the Navy. His father served in Vietnam.

“The Navy saved my life … it certainly put me on a better path,” he said.

Threlkeld also spoke about the importance of honoring past veterans and supporting those fighting today.

“Chilton County (residents) have and will continue to do their part to serve the country,” said Threlkeld.

He warned: “The easiest way for evil to triumph is for good men to sit back and do nothing.”

DAV Chapter 33, Clanton VFW Post 3193, American Legion Post 6 and American Legion Post 343 put on Wednesday’s program.
