The cost of home heating is a concern for many people during the fall and winter months. But customers of Alabama Gas Corp. are getting a break this year.

Due to a decrease in supply costs, the utility is lowering its rates by an average of about $60 per customer per year. That figure is a rough estimate made by a company spokesperson.

Alabama Gas, based in Birmingham, recently notified the Alabama Public Service Commission of the rate change, which is the company’s fourth rate reduction since November 2008.

The commission allows Alabama Gas Corp. to adjust its rates as needed to stay in line with the fluctuating cost of obtaining natural gas.
