The public is invited to honor local veterans during a Veterans Day program Wednesday, Nov. 11 at American Legion Post 6.

The program will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a time of refreshments. Admission is free.

“The purpose of this program is to help folks remember veterans and mostly just keep up the honor and privilege of serving a great country,” American Legion Post 6 Commander Jerry Grooms said.

Grooms encourages citizens to not only consider veterans past and present but also those who will serve in the future.

The patriotic speaker will be Commander Robert Threlkeld, retired, United States Navy. Threlkeld, a native of Verbena, first served as the main propulsion assistant aboard the USS Flint and subsequently served in other commands in various duties to include the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, the guided missile frigate USS Carr, Destroyer Squadron Thirty Six and the destroyer USS John Rodgers.

Upon retirement in April 2001, he was hired by Tenaska as the plant manager of two natural gas fired combined cycle plants in Billingsley.

He is married to the former Rebecca Alred of Clanton.

Wednesday’s program will be put on by DAV Chapter 33, Clanton VFW Post 3193, American Legion Post 6 and American Legion Post 343.

Post 6 is located on Enterprise Road in Clanton near Barth Lumber Co.
