To many, today might seem like just another Wednesday. This may be true for you, depending on where your priorities lie.

But every American who looks at a calendar, keeps up with the news or stays aware of what’s going on in their community will be reminded of the importance of this Wednesday. It’s Veterans Day.

Most likely, someone in your family has served or is serving in the U.S. military. Just last week, we read of two local brothers who are World War II veterans chosen for an Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial.

Just like the World War II memorial pays tribute to the veterans of the Greatest Generation, Veterans Day belongs to all veterans — those past, present and future. If anyone deserves a holiday, it’s these people. They are the ones we thank for the many freedoms we tend to take for granted every day.

If you get the chance, stop by American Legion Post 6 on Enterprise Road in Clanton today at 11 a.m. This special ceremony is a great opportunity to stop and reflect on the sacrifices veterans have made and continue to make for our freedom.

The guest speaker will be Commander Robert Threlkeld, retired, United States Navy. He is a Verbena native who will surely have plenty of interesting things to say.

The event is open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.

Several local schools are also hosting Veterans Day events this morning. We think this is an important thing for students to be aware of.

Regardless of whether you know someone who served in the military, you owe just a few minutes of your time to think of our veterans. It’s not much to ask, considering what they have sacrificed for us.
