Marbury’s Bulldogs (3-7) beat the Red Devils (5-5) at Verbena Friday night, 18-6.

The Red Devils offense accounted for 74 yards rushing, and quarterback Brad Boswell competed 15 of 38 passes for 159 yards in the losing effort.

Marbury rushed for 136 yards and passed for 196 yards to beat the nearby Red Devils.

Lorensa Cooper ran 19 yards for Marbury’s first score with 1:50 left in the first quarter. The touchdown capped a 90-yard drive.

Keston Chapman put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard again with 8 seconds left in the quarter on a 41-yard run after catching a Raymond Davies pass.

Nakeal Robinson intercepted a Verbena pass that bounced off a Red Devil helmet and ran 15 yards for the Bulldog’s final tally with 4:14 left in the quarter.

Verbena took the following kick and rushed and passed to the Bulldog 9 but was once again turned away by Marbury’s defense. A partially blocked Marbury punt in the fourth quarter gave Verbena field position on the Bulldog 28. Boswell passed two yards to Kelley Lucas for the Red Devil’s score with 6:58 to play.

Verbena had two other opportunities to score in the remaining five minutes, but the stingy Bulldog defense stopped both drives.

Verbena was penalized six times for 32 yards and Marbury was flagged five times for 35 yards. Verbena booked 14 first downs, and Marbury charted 10.

The game was the final outing for both teams. Next week, the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Football Championship Tournament will begin.
