The Verbena Red Devils (4-3, 2-3 region) couldn’t catch up with the Talladega County Central Tigers (5-2, 4-1) Friday night, losing their third homecoming game 34-14.

The Red Devil’s Bay Lucas got things going with an interception, but Verbena fumbled on the next play and the Tigers recovered.

After the Devils took over on downs, however, Lucas redeemed himself with a 30-yard touchdown run. Dustin Short capped it off with a 2-point conversion.

The Tigers answered quickly as Cameron Duncan scored on a 75-yard kickoff return followed by his own conversion.

The clock was stopped at 1:57 in the first quarter due to inclement weather. The game resumed after approximately 30 minutes.

Duncan would score twice more in the first half, the latter on a 25-yard keeper with 2:26 remaining.

At halftime, the score was 21-8 Talladega County Central.

Kelly Lucas shared his brother’s spotlight with a short touchdown run in the third, but that would be all for the Devils.

The duo of Duncan and V’nonte Chapman took to the air in the third and fourth quarters, scoring on 19- and 25-yard plays.

“Turnovers killed us, and our ability to tackle,” Verbena coach Mike Harris said. “We didn’t play very well on special teams. They’ve got a good team.”
