Effort still there for Rebels

THORSBY — As has been the case all season, the effort wasn’t the problem in Thorsby’s 36-20 loss to Vincent on Oct. 2.
“The effort has been there all year long,” coach Billy Jackson said. “We just have a big play every time.
“Right now, we’re playing better, but we’re still not good enough to overcome [mistakes].”
The Rebels (0-5, 0-3 Class 2A, Region 4) actually led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter, but, again, a big play broke the game open in favor of the visitors.
This time, it was a 54-yard Vincent touchdown pass on a 3rd-and-four with 7:11 remaining in the first half. Brett Frizzell ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-1) would never trail again.
Thorsby had answered a 3-yard touchdown run by Juwan Rogers in the first quarter with a 2-yard Andrew Farris touchdown run, and Eric Camarillo ran in the 2-point play to give the hosts a lead.
Vincent went up 22-8 before the half on a 10-yard pass from Kelley to Frizzell, but Thorsby wouldn’t go away.
Vincent scored on a 5-yard run by Kelley on the first possession of the second half, but the Rebels answered with Marcus Bray running back the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score.
Vincent came back with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kelley to Jerome Kelley on 4th-and-11.
Again, Thorsby responded. But the 6-yard scoring run by Kalup Nunn was all the Rebels could muster the rest of the way.
The Rebels will look for their first win of the season when they host Shades Mountain Christian on Friday.
