Pickens County never gave the home team Isabella a chance.

The No. 1-ranked Tornadoes scored three touchdowns in their first five plays and won convincingly, 52-6.

The top team in Class 2A scored offensive, defensive and special teams touchdowns and was pitching a shutout late into the fourth quarter.

Isabella would spoil that when Allen Edwards found the end zone with 5:35 to go in the game, drawing cheers from the sideline.

The Tornadoes lit up the first quarter with three consecutive plays resulting in touchdowns. Pickens County’s third play from scrimmage, a 71-yard bomb from Deion Curry to Keith Hall, put the visitors up, 6-0.

Their next two plays, a 65-yard pass from Curry to Jamal Giles and a 57-yard pass from Curry to Domninque Jones, also resulted in touchdowns.

Isabella had chances to score in the first half but couldn’t capitalize. The Mustangs were intercepted and turned the ball over on downs on the Tornado’s 11-yard-line.

Pickens County kept up the explosive plays in the second half, scoring on an interception, punt return and an 80-yard touchdown pass.

Edwards’ touchdown came after several good Isabella drives in the second half.

The Mustangs fall to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in Class 2A, Region 3.

Pickens County improves to 6-0 and 4-0 in the region and look like serious contenders for the 2A championship.
