North Chilton going all out for Fire Prevention

North Chilton Fire and Rescue is pulling out all the stops for Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 4-10. On Monday night, the department will host a community-wide fire prevention and emergency services program.

People from nearly every facet of public safety will be on hand to meet and greet local residents, and there will be activities for all ages.

The program will take place in the gymnasium of Providence Baptist Church, next door to the fire station, as well as outdoors from 6-8 p.m.

Admission is free.

“Anybody that is in a rescue specialty is going to have a representative there,” said North Chilton Fire Chief Jason Scott.

Apparatus on display will include North Chilton engine companies, North Chilton rescue vehicles, LifeSaver helicopter with pilot and personnel (weather permitting), Chilton County Sheriff’s Department vehicles and officers, Alabama State Troopers helicopter and Critical Incident Team, Regional Paramedical Ambulance, EMA of Chilton County, CERT of Chilton County, and a fire prevention education trailer.

EMS personnel will offer free blood pressure checks, and attendees may also sign up for CPR classes.

Refreshments will be served.

It doesn’t take long to figure out that this isn’t your ordinary public safety program.

“It’s not going to advertise just one agency,” Scott said. “It’s going to benefit all agencies.”

The primary objective is to educate the public about people who may help them in a crisis situation. Children will be able to see officials in their uniforms and know that they are there to help and not to harm. Adults will learn just how many individuals and entities it takes to serve and protect the public.

Scott added the Chilton County Office of the Alabama Forestry Commission will have representatives there speaking about how to obtain a burn permit and the process of doing a controlled burn safely.

Also, an ALFA insurance agent and claims adjuster will be present.

“Say your house catches on fire,” Scott supposed. “What is the process of filing a claim and what all is actually involved in the transaction of that claim?”

The fire station and church are located off County Road 46, off Alabama Highway 155, between Jemison and Montevallo.
