Several county roads were closed Monday due to floodwaters, according to Chilton County EMA Director Bill Collum.

The seven dirt roads were closed because they were covered by water.

Collum said flood problems are inevitable given the torrential rainfall this week and Chilton County’s 600 miles of unpaved roads.

Efforts to reach officials with the county road department to see which roads were closed were unsuccessful Monday afternoon.

The threat of flash flooding will continue across all of central Alabama today.

Any additional rainfall will cause more flooding because the ground is already so saturated that more rainfall has nowhere to go, according to the National Weather Service.

The greatest risk for flash flooding will be along and west of Interstate 65.

The EMA and National Weather Service both caution drivers not to enter areas where water covers the roadway.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles, according to the weather service. Just 1 foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.

When encountering flooded ways, the NWS advises people to follow the motto: “Turn Around … Don’t Drown.”
