With a newfound determination at Saturday’s Oak Grove volleyball tournament, Thorsby ended Jemison’s 13-match winning streak.
It was the first time the Rebels advanced out of pool play in a tournament and the first time they had defeated Jemison in coach Ginger Williams’ four-year tenure.
Williams had bemoaned her team’s lack of toughness, but Thorsby seems to have found some. The Rebels (10-6) won Game 1 against Jemison, 25-17, before dropping Game 2, 8-25.
Instead of folding tent, though, the Rebels fought back and won Game 3, 15-11.
“The biggest thing they’ve learned to do now is how to win even though we may not be playing our best ball,” assistant coach Keith Williams said.
Thorsby defeated host Oak Grove (31-29, 19-25, 15-12) and Corner (25-0, 25-4) in pool play before facing Jemison and Pinson Valley, who topped the Rebels 25-20, 25-16.
Brittany Maddox finished the tournament with 13 kills, three blocks, five aces and eight digs. Kelsie Davis added 13 kills and two blocks. Holly Smith had 32 assists, 13 aces and five digs.
Michelle Hendrix was good for four aces and 21 digs. Sade’ Archie had six kills. Desiree Evans had six kills and six aces. Stephanie Moore had four kills, five aces and eight digs, and Kendra Dawson had two aces and 10 digs.
