Five talented young women will compete for the title of Chilton County Junior Miss on Sunday, Sept. 13.

After a solid month of practices, the contestants are ready to perform routines in physical fitness, poise, and their own unique talent. Each will also be judged on academics and personal interviews.

The 2009 Junior Miss will receive scholarships to the college of her choice as well as the opportunity to advance to the state finals in Montgomery in January 2010.

“Junior Miss is not a beauty contest,” said Chilton County Junior Miss chairperson Gwen Davis. “We’re looking for all-around girls — not just the brains, and not just talent but the whole package.”

The contestants — all high school seniors from around the county — are Macee Thomas, Jana Davenport, Katie Hilyer, Lauren Morgan and Jessica Swindle.

And they’ve got some big shoes to fill. Last year’s Chilton County Junior Miss, Abigail Dy, was named first runner-up at the state level.

Davis said she hopes to increase participation each year.

“Some members think if more younger parents would bring their girls to see the program, it might encourage them to work toward Junior Miss,” she said, “because they only get one shot.”

Sunday’s competition, sponsored by local teacher organization Delta Kappa Gamma, will begin at 2 p.m. in the Chilton County High School auditorium. Admission is $5 per person.

Special entertainment will be provided by a variety of former Junior Miss winners, known as “Has Beens.” Julie Bentley is the choreographer for the performances.
