Column: Break needed for students with flu

Students got their first break of the school year in observance of Labor Day. It was a much needed holiday because of the virus and influenza cases in the school. School nurses sent home notices to parents with instructions on how to help prevent the spread of sickness among the children. We continue to ask parents to keep children at home if they are running a fever and keep them at home until they have been free of fever for a minimum of 24 hours.
The school custodians have been working extra hard to keep our school clean, and teachers are encouraging our students to keep their hands washed. The teachers have also been teaching the children how to properly cover their nose and mouth when sneezing. Parents can contact the school nurse if they have any questions about proper procedures to follow if their child is sick. We will get through this tough time with everyone working together!
The band and the cheerleaders added excitement and enthusiasm to the student body in preparations for the season openers of the sports programs. The sound of the band filled the school with life on Friday, and the cheerleaders brought the spirit!
Congratulations to the volleyball team on their great start to the season. Coaches Ginger and Keith Williams have been building the volleyball program over the past few years, and their hard work is paying off as demonstrated by the play of this wonderful group of young ladies.
A great big “thank you” is owed to everyone in the Town of Thorsby for coming out to support the football team in the season opener. We had a tremendous crowd to support a team that is rebuilding, and the team showed a “don’t quit” attitude in their game. It is evident that everyone in town is behind this team and encourages them to continue to work hard!
The Junior High football team got off to a winning start with a victory over Shades Mountain Christian in its season opener. The kickoff time for all of the team’s home games will be 6 p.m. on Tuesday nights.
It is time for the school fall fundraiser to begin, and it will be extremely helpful to our school for it to be successful. Local school funds are being used to make up for the budget cuts by the State Department of Education. Everyone is suffering from the bad economic situation, so any help to our school is greatly appreciated. We have secured enough desks for everyone, and now we are awaiting a decision on additional textbooks to accommodate the increase in the student population.
The kindergarten students will welcome grandparents to class on Sept. 11 with “Goodies for Grandparents”. School picture remakes and Progress Reports will be on Sept. 14.
The kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th grade students will undergo a vision screening on Sept. 15th. Seniors will attend a college and career fair on Sept. 16th and order their portraits on Sept. 17th. A Title 1 School Involvement Meeting for parents and teachers will be held on Sept. 17th at 6 p.m. in the school library. Please make plans to attend!
