The Maplesville Red Devils (2-0) won a battle of the defenses Friday night to defeat the No. 3 R.A. Hubbard Chiefs (1-1) for their second consecutive shutout, 20-0.

Maplesville was No. 6 in the state going into the game, but the Devils lacked nothing in motivation.

“Once again, our defense has stepped up to the plate,” Maplesville coach Brent Hubbert said. “I think our offensive line did a good job of pass protection. Our quarterback threw the ball when he needed to, and our receivers caught the ball real well.”

Mathew Hamner connected with Darrell Goodwin in the first quarter for an 11-yard touchdown play.

After forcing the Chiefs to punt, the Devils doubled their lead as Hamner found Chris Bailey for another 11-yard touchdown.

With just under 6 minutes left in the half, Dylan Wallace, Brett Connell and James Madsen sacked the Chiefs’ quarterback for a 20-yard loss. Then, Connell blocked a punt and Cameron Andrews recovered for the Devils.

Before halftime, R.A. Hubbard failed to capitalize on two interceptions from Mykmyk Ingram and Nickoli Davenport. Then, Maplesville’s Tyler Crumpton answered by picking off a pass.

In the third, Hunter McCay scored on a short run to make it 20-0. Crumpton intercepted, but no one else would score.

For the Devils, Hamner completed 14 of 16 passes for 167 yards. The top rusher was Bailey with 47 yards.

The Maplesville defense held R.A. Hubbard to 60 yards rushing, 32 yards passing and just six first downs.
