After a momentary setback, the Thorsby volleyball on Tuesday continued the push for its best season in four years with a straight-game win over Sylacauga.

The Rebels downed the visitors, who were missing two starters because of the flu, 25-10, 25-23, 25-18, in a match that was played in front of an unusually high number of Thorsby students because a 2 p.m. start.

The Rebels dropped two out of three matches in the Calera Invitational Tournament on Aug. 29 because of inconsistent play, coach Ginger Williams said, but performed much better against the Aggies.

Thorsby is now 5-3 on the season, only two wins behind last year’s total of seven, with more than one month left to play.

Desiree Evans served the Rebels to a 17-4 lead in Game 1, and they never looked back. Evans ended up with five aces.

There was more adversity in Game 2 for Thorsby. Sylacauga started out with a 4-1 lead and even led 17-13 when Jasmine DeBardlabon aced the hosts four consecutive times.

The Aggies led 23-17, but Thorsby came all the way back thanks to the serving of Stephanie Moore. A Kelsie Davis kill gave Thorsby the lead for good in the game.

Moore finished with three kills and six aces in seven service attempts.

Thorsby put the game away in Game 3 even though the score was tied as late as 12-all.

Brittany Maddox had a team-high seven kills, followed closely by Sade’ Archie’s five kills. Holly Smith contributed 12 assists and four aces.

Thorsby and Marbury will visit Holtville beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
