A Clanton teenager faces charges of breaking into Southern Dance and Skate over the weekend.

Travis Lee Thomas, 18, has been charged with burglary and theft of property.

Southern Dance and Skate, which is located off U.S. 31, was broken into twice over the weekend. Police say evidence from the scene led them to Thomas.

Police Chief Brian Stilwell believes the arrest will also help close several recent home burglaries in the Cotton Mill and Lomax communities.

“This arrest is the first step in clearing several of these cases,” said Stilwell.

Thomas is cooperating with police, and items from both the skating rink and burglarized homes have been recovered, Stillwell said.

More arrests are expected soon.

“Additional warrants will be signed today, and I anticipate several more arrests in these cases,” Stilwell said.

Authorities believe teenagers and young adults are breaking into places to support drug habits.

“Most of our suspects are young adults and teenagers whom we believe are committing these crimes to be able to acquire illegal drugs,” Stilwell said.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information should contact Detective Freddie Mayfield at the Clanton Police Department at 755-1194.
