Mustangs maturing

Last week, Isabella looked like a volleyball team with several newcomers playing in its first match of the season, which would up being a loss to LAMP.

The Mustangs weren’t perfect on Monday, but coach Glen Graham said they were “better.”

“I worked them pretty hard,” Graham said. “They know what they’re capable of.”

The Mustangs flashed some of that potential Monday, defeating Shelby County High, 25-13, 25-9, and Marbury, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10.

And the younger Mustangs (3-1) that looked awestruck in their first varsity starts played a significant part of Isabella’s wins.

Jessica Maciel had two aces and nine assists, Heather Mason contributed four aces, and both Kaylynn Culp and Devan Gallet had two aces.

The Isabella stalwarts did their thing, too: Amber Wyatt had 14 kills, and Marlee Hayes had 10 assists.

Savannah Kissel pitched in five kills and five blocks.

Shelby (1-1) defeated Marbury (0-2), 25-15, 25-17 in the night’s other varsity match.

Isabella visits Billingsley beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
