A masked gunman robbed the Days Inn Clanton on Wednesday.

The hotel was robbed around 9:22 p.m., when a man wearing a mask entered the lobby. He was carrying a small handgun and forced the clerk to lie down on the floor while he took an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Police Chief Brian Stilwell.

He then fled on foot, probably to a nearby getaway vehicle, Stilwell said.

The suspect is a black man, but no other description is available because he was wearing a hooded jacket and mask.

Jemison Police thought they might have found the robber Wednesday when an officer stopped a man on Interstate 65 near mile marker 218.

However, the man turned out not to be who authorities were looking for.

Tracking dogs from the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office were also brought to help look for the suspect, but they found no scent.

The hotel robbery follows an Aug. 15 hold-up of Taco Bell and the July 30 burglaries of Peach Park and an Exxon Station.

Stilwell said his department has assigned an officer to strictly patrol the ramp and businesses near Exit 205.
