A Selma man who was arrested in 2008 for the murder of a west Autauga County woman was released Friday.

The Autauga County grand jury found there was not sufficient evidence to convict Clifford Wynn, 45, as it wrapped up deliberations Friday.

Wynn was arrested in December of last year and charged in the killing of Patricia Gayle Lasserre, a former employee of the Clanton Walmart. The victim’s family reported her missing Dec. 19, 2005, when she did not return home from work.

Lasserre’s body was found in a wooded area off Autauga County Road 1 near Billingsley, not far from her Chevrolet Suburban. The location was approximately 2 miles from her home.

“There was insufficient evidence to indict it, but it continues to be an open investigation and will remain so until we convict,” said District Attorney Randall Houston, who represents Chilton, Autauga and Elmore counties. “There are items of evidentiary value we will continue to assess.”

Wynn was reportedly being held in the Autauga Metro Jail under a $300,000 bond before his release.

Houston said Wynn was now being referred to as simply an “identified person of interest.”

The case is a joint investigation between the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. Houston also said the DA’s office would be involved.

The grand jury will reconvene in six months.
