Thorsby’s “Movies In the Park” experiment has been such a rousing success that the town council is already thinking about including some money for the project in next year’s budget.

Thorsby Mayor Dearl Hilyer said at Monday’s town council meeting that funds for a new projector screen and new audio equipment could be in the offing.

“It’s been very positive,” Hilyer said. “It’s gone way beyond what we thought.”

The fourth and final movie to be shown at Richard Wood Park will be “Race to Witch Mountain.” The film will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Hilyer estimated more than 200 people showed up for each of first two movies in the park and that more than 150 people were present for the third one.

Hilyer said the town borrows audio equipment for the events and that a screen that sits higher off the ground would be preferred. Hilyer said such a screen could be purchased for about $1,000.

Movies in the Park was one of Hilyer’s campaign promises, but he gave credit to the town fire department for making the idea a reality. The rest of the council also seemed on board with trying to expand the event.

“I’m thinking this could be a great thing if there’s not a lot of expense,” councilman Marvin Crumpton said. “It could help bring in some business.”

In other business, the council:

Approved the minutes from meetings of the town Parks and Recreation Committee on July 13 and July 21

Approved financial statements submitted by the Parks and Recreation Committee and the fire department

Approved the installation of a caller ID system for Town Hall

Approved the purchase of advertisements with the Thorsby athletic department

Paid the bills, including the transfer of funds where necessary.
