Paving will improve park

Some of Chilton County’s greatest assets are its natural resources. So, we should take the time and spend the money to improve those resources whenever we can.

Such is the case with a large parking lot being paved at Higgins Ferry Park. Higgins Ferry is the only public boat launch on Lake Mitchell, which forms much of Chilton County’s eastern border.

Higgins Ferry is often used by local residents and is even an attraction to out-of-towners because it is easily accessible from Birmingham and Montgomery yet doesn’t usually include the hassle of Lay Lake, for example. But though Mitchell remains a relatively small and quiet lake, Higgins Ferry is being used more each year. Weekends usually feature packed parking lots, and the fact that the larger of those lots wasn’t, until this week, paved presented a problem.

Visitors get blocked in, and vehicles sometimes line up for half a mile down the road. The paving of the large lot at the entrance of Higgins Ferry will make the park, and Chilton County itself, more attractive.
