The Jemison and Clanton police departments will both host National Night Out on Tuesday evening, a nationwide event designed to fight crime and build relationships between local law enforcement and the community.

In Jemison the event will be held at Jemison City Park from 6-8 p.m. It will feature a DUI simulation course, which challenges drivers to maneuver a golf cart through a course while wearing goggles that simulate impaired vision. There will also be representatives from various areas of public safety present.

In Clanton the event will be at Goose Pond Park from 6-9 p.m. and will feature emergency vehicles such as Clanton’s ladder fire truck, an ambulance and a helicopter, hamburger and hot dogs as well as child ID kits.

Clanton Chief of Police Brian Stilwell said the event is a good time for people to meet their local law enforcement officers and ask them questions.

“It’s just a good time for us to get out and mingle with the community,” Stilwell said.

This is the first year National Night Out has been held in Clanton, and Stilwell hopes to bring it back next year.

“We hope that this will be a continuing and ongoing event,” he said.

Stilwell has been involved in National Night Out in Jemison in years past, and said it has grown in popularity each year.

Jemison Chief of Police Shane Fulmer said National Night Out has gone over well in the past and offers something for all ages.
