Clanton’s City Council on Monday night tabled a discussion about creating a full-time position of fire chief within the city’s volunteer fire department until further questions about the position are cleared up.

Council member Bobby Cook said he had questions about the proposed position and wanted answers to those questions before a vote on the matter was taken. He said he wanted to see a job description of the position.

Council member Mary Smith agreed and asked City Clerk Debbie Orange to contact other communities where a full-time chief leads a volunteer force.

“It would be good for us to know how well it works in those towns,” she said.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver said since members of the council had questions they wanted answered, he asked for a motion to table the matter until the council obtained more information about the proposed position. David Driver serves as chief of the all-volunteer fire department.

If a full-time fire chief is appointed, his term of office would end at the same time the terms of the current council members end.

In other business, the council agreed to extend the franchise agreement with Charter Communications until March 31, 2010. The council also approved a contract for Louise Campbell to continue to write and seek grant approvals for the city.
