Shaking off the rust

Thorsby and Verbena got some much needed football practice Tuesday.

The host Red Devils played in their first 7-on-7 competition of the summer and played well, defeating Thorsby 8-7 on a Johnta Gaston interception and tying Dallas County High 6-6 in their first two games of the evening.

“Once we got the jitters out, we played OK,” coach Mike Harris said.

Both of Verbena’s scoring plays in the first two games came on Brad Boswell-to-Brandon White connections.

Thorsby, meanwhile, has competed in several such competitions this summer—but not with rising freshman and back-up quarterback Nathan Oldroyd running the show exclusively.

Oldroyd led the Rebels down the field on their first possession against Verbena before finding Dillan Simmons for a touchdown from about the 10-yard line.

Oldroyd found Simmons for another touchdown in a 12-8 win over DCHS.

“We’ve had a couple of balls that we floated and a couple we should have had some touch on, but Nathan’s doing a real good job,” coach Billy Jackson said.
