I was reminded a few days ago that it’s almost time for the annual Farm, Home and Wildlife Expo.

The Expo is held each summer at the Chilton Research and Extension Center on County Road 29 near Thorsby. I have attended each year for the past several years, and the heat never seems to deter the hundreds who attend this important agricultural event.

But you don’t have to be a farmer to appreciate the Expo. It’s fun, and there’s something there for all ages. And the admission price is right — it’s free.

There are countless demonstrations and lectures that change every year — so many that there’s no way a short list could do them justice.

My favorite part of the Expo by far is the fruit and vegetable tasting booth. You get to try both traditional and experimental varieties of peaches, tomatoes, apples, figs and many more. I usually make at least two trips to the booth (they have never limited the number of samples, or maybe I am just so sneaky that they don’t notice).

There are also tractors and other pieces of farm equipment on display. Through all the displays and demos, you can learn a lot about advancements in the agriculture.

The Expo will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 from noon until 5 p.m. A detailed schedule of activities will be available in future editions of The Clanton Advertiser. Be sure not to miss this one.
