Marbury High School’s FFA chapter placed high in several events at the state FFA convention in Auburn, held in June.

Senior Kacey Colquitt was elected as a state FFA treasurer and will represent Alabama at the national convention in Indianapolis this fall.

Also, the chapter’s parliamentary team took home the state championship banner, while Blaire Landry and Delenna Harris placed third in Quiz Bowl and Landry placed third in Creed Speaking.

Each of these will go on to compete at nationals in October.

“FFA gives kids so many opportunities to grow in leadership, and it teaches them about agriculture, especially today,” Colquitt said. “They have no idea where their food comes from or where their clothes come from. It makes a big difference in their lives when they learn about agriculture.”

Colquitt joined the FFA in seventh grade and has served as an officer since her freshman year. She has served as both secretary and president of her chapter and is currently president of the Central Alabama District. She will assume her role as state treasurer for the 2009-2010 year.

Those elected as state officers must first earn their state degree, which requires them to be an FFA member for two years. State officers serve for only one year.

Colquitt has participated in many events, but her favorite by far is debate team, or parliamentary procedure.

“It incorporates leadership and agriculture,” she said. “It’s really a thrilling competition.”

As state treasurer, Colquitt will visit chapters across the state, write letters to agriscience teachers, train district officers, participate in workshops and plan the state convention for 2010. She will also vote on issues at the national convention.
